NPD: Nintendo DSi XL outsold PSP in March 2010 |
17 Apr |
Michael Pachter described the March launch of Nintendo’s latest handheld, the Nintendo DSi XL, “solid.” Considering it outsold both the PSP and PSP Go combined, we’re inclined to agree.
According to NPD figures (via Gamasutra), the DSi XL sold 141,000 units in March, besting PSP’s combined 120,000. Even more impressive is that this figure only accounts for four days of sales; the DSi XL was released on March 28th. The tremendous success of the equally tremendous device confirms that there truly is “room to grow” for the DS market.

March NPD: Pokemon and Kratos catch all the money
Filed under: Gaming

16 Apr |
The ill-timed announcement of the 3DS wasn’t enough to scare consumers off from purchasing new DS systems. Thanks to the combination of a new hardware variant (the big, big, big DSi XL) and new Pokemon games, the dual-screened platform sold like gangbusters. Meanwhile, hardware shortages kept the PS3 from massive sales despite the fact that it had the best-selling game of March (God of War 3).
Speaking of software, we’ve learned a lot about you from this month. For example, Final Fantasy fans strongly prefer PS3, Battlefield fans strongly prefer 360, and Pokemon fans’ dollar votes went to SoulSilver over HeartGold by quite a lot. How do you even decide something like that? Seriously, one of the 1.78 million or so of you who bought it — take us through your process!
-DS: 701K88K (14%)
-Wii: 558K160K (40%)
-360: 338K>84K (-20%)
-PS3: 314K46K (-13%)
-PSP: 120K13K (-10%)
-PS2: 118K16K (16%)

Square Enix trademarks ‘The 4 Heroes of Light’
Filed under: Gaming
|
13 Apr |
Square Enix’s original, classic-style Final Fantasy for DS appears to be heading westward. Square Enix trademarked “The 4 Heroes of Light” in the US, which matches pretty closely with the translation of Hikari no 4 Senshi: Final Fantasy Gaiden (“4 Warriors of Light”), the streamlined DS Final Fantasy released in Japan in October. To see the trademark filing, it’s number
85006964, searchable in the USPTO database. It might just be the next game you pay the Square Enix tax (by which we mean the customary $40 price for Square’s DS games) on!
Square Enix’s subsidiary Taito also trademarked “Dariusburst,” (serial number
85008406) which, unless some bizarre trick is involved, refers to last year’s PSP shooter, which updates the company’s classic robo-fish-shooting Darius series.

Apple Beat Nintendo to a Unified Gaming Network…For Shame
Filed under: Gaming
|
8 Apr |
Alright, I know this isn’t an Apple blog, but today’s iPhone OS 4.0 announcement brought us word that Apple is working on a unified social gaming network. That’s right, Apple beat Nintendo to it, leaving Nintendo the only major competitor in the market that doesn’t have one.
PS3 & PSP: Playstation Network
X-Box 360: X-Box Live
iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch: Game Center
PC: Steam
Wii & DS/3DS: ???
For being an a major innovator in the video game industry, Nintendo sure is taking their sweet time on this. If they don’t announce something at E3, I’ll be very, very put out. Its a matter of necessity at this point. A little hint, Nintendo: CLUB NINTENDO!

24 Mar |
Did you have some toast for breakfast this morning? Perhaps you would have enjoyed it more with some MONSTER JAM. Activision has announced Monster Jam 2011, a new game in its series of licensed monster truck racing games, for Xbox 360, PS3, PSP, Wii, and DS for release this fall.
Monster Jam 2011 includes your favorite jamming monster trucks, like Grave Digger, Maximum Destruction, and Grinder (30 trucks in total), as well as eight real stadiums in which the monsters can jam. It features a single-player career mode in which players compete to reach the Monster Jam World Finals, as well as a head-to-head mode.
Charlie Mancuso, president of Feld Motor Sports, the company that produces the real-life Monster Jam, said in the announcement, “our fans are going to flip when they get their hands on it!” Hopefully said fans aren’t in monster trucks at the time, or it would be tragic.

Bad Company 2 in good company on Japanese sales chart
Filed under: Gaming

24 Mar |
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 has cracked the Japanese sales chart in its first week of release — the only Western title to appear in the top ten — having amassed 28,353 unit in sales of the PS3 version to reach #7 in the weekly rankings. In addition to being the only Western game in the top ten, it’s also the only PS3 game!
The Media Create chart is heavy on new games this week. In addition to Battlefield, the third game in what used to be the Badman series debuted at #4, Dynasty Warriors: Strikeforce 2 on PSP entered the chart at #5, and NIS’s Absolute Hero Modding Project gave the publisher a much-needed source of income at #6. RPG Maker DS is the other new title on the chart, at #8. See the full top ten after the break.

Analyst: iPhone has Apple taking a bite out of DS, PSP software sales |
23 Mar |
This whole iPhone as a gaming platform thing might just be catching on. According to a report by mobile analytics firm Flurry, revenue from games sold for Apple’s touch-based devices grew from $115 million in 2008 to an estimated $500 million last year in the US. Impressive indeed — but even more so is Flurry’s research showing that iPhone / iPod touch games now account for at least 19 percent of total US handheld software revenue, up from 5 percent in 2009.
Flurry’s findings show that most of that share has been taken away from Sony’s PSP, which accounted for 11 percent of 2009’s handheld software revenue, down from 20 percent the year before. Money taken in from Nintendo DS game sales, on the other hand(held), only decreased five percent since 2008, with Flurry pegging it at 70 percent of the market in ‘09.
The firm sees Apple continuing to put the [...]
