Square Enix trademarks ‘The 4 Heroes of Light’
Filed under: Gaming
|
13 Apr |
Square Enix’s original, classic-style Final Fantasy for DS appears to be heading westward. Square Enix trademarked “The 4 Heroes of Light” in the US, which matches pretty closely with the translation of Hikari no 4 Senshi: Final Fantasy Gaiden (“4 Warriors of Light”), the streamlined DS Final Fantasy released in Japan in October. To see the trademark filing, it’s number
85006964, searchable in the USPTO database. It might just be the next game you pay the Square Enix tax (by which we mean the customary $40 price for Square’s DS games) on!
Square Enix’s subsidiary Taito also trademarked “Dariusburst,” (serial number
85008406) which, unless some bizarre trick is involved, refers to last year’s PSP shooter, which updates the company’s classic robo-fish-shooting Darius series.

How Jimmy Fallon got into Dark Void Zero
|
13 Apr |
[Capcom-Unity]
As weird as an 8-bit style promotional DSiWare game made for a high-end next-gen game is, the weirdest thing about Dark Void Zero is definitely the Jimmy Fallon connection. According to the fake history Capcom and Other Ocean concocted for the DSiWare game, a young Fallon won a contest in the ’80s and won both placement in the fictional game and the only known copy of the title, which Capcom “tracked down” to port to DSiWare (and now iPhone and PC, as well). We assumed it was just a desperate celebrity endorsement on the part of Capcom, but the truth is actually even weirder.
Other Ocean’s Mike Mika thought up the “contest winner” angle to make the game seem more authentic, but decided that having someone well-known win the prize would make it even more identifiable. Speaking to GameSetWatch, Mika said “So, in this case, we worked on a game a [...]

Hands-on: Lucha Libre: AAA Heroes of the Ring |
13 Apr |
Konami is no stranger to the stranger side of wrestling games. After all, it was the company that brought us the all-girl Rumble Roses. Now it has picked up publishing rights to Lucha Libre: AAA Heroes of the Ring, which delves into the wild world of the Mexican luchadores and their masked in-ring antics.
Playing an early build of the game at last week’s Konami Gamers Night, I couldn’t help but notice that, underneath all of the focus being placed on the type of wrestling going on, the game itself already feels like a competent wrestling title. I had a chance to enter the ring one-on-one against another human opponent and what followed was a well-paced match, albeit not the most exciting to look at — but only because we were both just learning the ropes.

This Week on the Nintendo Channel: Monster Hunter Tri developer’s voice
Filed under: Gaming
|
12 Apr |
We thought it prudent to take a break from the WarioWare D.I.Y. highlighting of the last few weeks even though there’s a new video in the ongoing series this week, with Alex Neuse from Gaijiin Games. See, this week some of the developers from Capcom show off a great deal of Monster Hunter Tri, documenting some of the weaponry, multiplayer features and, of course, the monsters in the series’ latest. It’s an enlightening few minutes of footage, so check it out above.
When you’re done, head past the break for the full list of this week’s Nintendo Channel content.

Mod adds LEDs and force feedback to DS Lite |
12 Apr |
Our biggest complaint about the DS Lite has been its woefully small number of LED lights. Thank goodness for modders then, because Tailor Made Toys has crafted the flashy DS Lite you see above. The kicker? It also has force feedback, which comes in two flavors: one is just normal rumble, while the other is a sort of “sensitive mode,” best for quieter games and when using headphones.
And if you want to commission one of these for yourself, you can get your own handheld modded for £40. We’re not sure what that squiggly line in front of the 40 means, but there it is. Head past the break for a video showing off the mod.

Miyamoto states the obvious, still makes news
Filed under: Gaming
|
12 Apr |
Leave it to the trigger-happy video games media to take generic quotes from an industry master and turn it into a story. Case in point, this happened over the weekend:
Miyamoto: “My best is yet to come”
Nintendo general manager wants Wii 2 to be “unique” and hints at new Starfox
New Star Fox! Wii HD, could be cool! Cats and dogs living in harmony! Naturally, neither of these will be happening anytime soon.
Of course, the interview was far less exciting than gaming pub MCV would have you believe. Miyamoto did mention a Wii successor, but only in the roundabout corporate PR speak way that any sane gaming hardware executive would answer such a question.
Technology is always evolving and Nintendo, just like other companies, is going to integrate those technologies into our new products as they develop,” Miyamoto added. “Whether that be a Wii HD, Wii 2 or an entirely new console, I [...]

Was touch the secret to DS success? |
10 Apr |
Since launching nearly six years ago, the Nintendo DS has enjoyed otherworldly success. It has sold faster than any video game system before it.
Including both DS Lite and DSi variations, Nintendo has shipped more than 130 million units worldwide, putting the DS on pace to become the best selling system ever—a mere 10 million away from current heavy weight champion, the PlayStation 2. And it still has legs. The DS, that is.
As we approach the arrival of the 3DS, what made its predecessor such a success? The obvious answer would be, “It’s the touch screen, dummy.” But that’s only the beginning.
When first shown in 2004, the gut reaction of the public to the DS went something like this: “Uh, Palm-like stylus games sucks. And why would I want two smaller screens when the soon-to-be release PlayStation Portable has one gigantic widescreen. Nintendo has really lost their marbles. Jig’s up.”
The system [...]

Why the Original NES Ice Hockey Needs a WiiWare Update |
10 Apr |
Maybe it’s because I’m turning into an old man, or maybe it’s because I’m Canadian, but one of my favorite sports games is still the original NES Ice Hockey. Like so many of Nintendo’s other games, Ice Hockey relies on accessible, yet addictive gameplay with a level of depth that keeps the game fun even more than twenty years later. Oh, and the fat players are adorable.
I propose that it is time to give this cherished classic the WiiWare update treatment that has been granted to other old-school games like Dr. Mario, Contra and Excitebike. There seem to be a lot of these updates these days, so someone besides me must be buying them.
Here’s my case:
Ice Hockey lends itself well to online play, perhaps with 4 or more players at a time. Mario Strikers style online play would be great, where you can mix local and online play to [...]

Pokemon Black and White announced for DS |
9 Apr |
The fifth-generation Pokémon game has been announced! At least, the titles for it have — Pokémon Black and White are the next generation of Pokémon games, to be released this fall on DS in Japan.
Nintendo’s going for relatively simple colors after things like “HeartGold” and “Pearl.” And … that’s pretty much all we know. Of course, given the way the series works, we can all kind of guess exactly how this will play. Or maybe not: a note on the Pokemon home page promises that “every aspect will be reborn innovatively,” according to our translation.
The first new creature from this generation has already been revealed as a sort of teaser: Zoroark, the Monster Fox Pokémon. The teaser site indicates that we’ll know more April 15.
[Thanks, Eric!]

Apple, Steve Jobs gunning for Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft with iPhone 4.0 update
Filed under: Gaming
|
8 Apr |
Nintendo may not (publicly) care much about people playing games on Apple products, but don’t tell that to Apple. At their iPhone OS 4.0 preview event today the company came out gunning for Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft.
Shot one was a social networking platform called Game Center that’s built into the phone’s OS. Basically, people in gaming will call this feature Xbox Live Lite, because that’s what it is: A semi-featured, multitasking matchmaking and leaderboard service that’s tied directly into the device’s operating system and connects to whatever games you have that might support its feature set. Also, Achievements!
Shot two was a “mine’s bigger” quote from Steve Jobs about the number of games on the iPhone/iPad platform. Here’s a summary: There are many, many more games on Apple “portables” today than there are on Nintendo or Sony. Quantity has nothing to do with quality, of course, but nevertheless you had [...]
