Pokemon to be Launch Title for Nintendo 3DS

As we’re all enjoying our Pokemon Heart Gold & Soul Silver, the world can’t help but squeeze additional information out about the next Pokemon iteration rumored to be hitting Japan later this year. Yesterday, the rumor mill spit out several different tidbits that make just about any Pokemaniac do somersaults all the way to the Pokemon Center.

Nintendo 3DS! – Pokemon Generation 5 will indeed be, as was speculated, a launch title for the Nintendo 3DS.
Transfer Your Pokemon – The game will be backwards compatible with the GBA and DS versions of the game, allowing you to transfer your Pokemon to your new game in a mechanic similar to the Pal Park (although there may be new gameplay elements involved).
Pokemon in 3D – Gen5 will significantly increase the graphics of the game, and will therefore be in full 3D graphics, much like the jump Mario & Zelda made to 3D on [...]

Analyst: Nintendo pressured by Japanese media into early 3DS reveal
1
Apr
Posted by in 3DS, DS, Gaming on 04 1st, 2010

M2 Research analyst Billy Pidgeon claims that the Japanese press were “all over” the upcoming 3DS before Nintendo revealed it, forcing an announcement out of the company’s headquarters in Japan. In a recent CNBC report, Pidgeon alleges that the media in Japan had “talked with suppliers there and Nintendo just wanted to get out ahead by breaking the news to prevent a leak.” This comes in response to the oddly-timed reveal of Nintendo’s next handheld device, less than a week before the fourth iteration of its Nintendo DS was set to land on retail shelves.
“Does it clash with the DSi XL? Yes it does,” Pidgeon says. He goes on to claim that (even though stock prices for Nintendo jumped following the 3DS announcement), “the corporate parent in Japan may not be acting in the best interest of Nintendo of America.” Alright, so, while we’re not convinced that those looking to [...]

Report: Nintendo rushed 3DS announcement so Japanese press couldn’t scoop it

Posted by admin in 3DS, DS, Gaming on 03 31st, 2010

Announcing a new handheld a few days before your next one is scheduled to launch doesn’t make a lot of sense, as Nintendo did with the 3DS last week shortly before releasing the DSi XL. But the uncanny maneuver wasn’t planned, it was forced, reports CNBC.
“Apparently, the Japanese press was all over it and talked with suppliers there and Nintendo just wanted to get out ahead by breaking the news to prevent a leak,” says Billy Pigeon, senior analyst with M2 Research. “Does it clash with the DSi XL? Yes it does. But the XL is old news in Japan.”

Great for fans. Not so great for prospective XL sales.

More Metroid Other M game play footage

Well would you look at me and my opinion on Metroid Other M. Swaying back in forth like a sock in the wind.
Before, I was skeptical. The response? Critical. Expected. Now, I see this video, and I can admit that I’m more intrigued at this moment in time than I was even a mere five minutes ago.
The voice acting and take-me-seriously Final Fantasy I wear big boy pants cutscenes still have me worried for this beloved franchise, but the insane mixing of 2D, 2.5D and 3D are starting to grow on me. Really, I mean that. I just hope the “narrative” doesn’t get in the way of the most important part of any Metroid title: the game.

Who wants to make a gentlemen’s bet? No money, in other words, just pride. The bet: Nintendo 3DS steals E3 this June and garners more hype than Natal and Move, combined.

With nonchalant 3DS reveal, Nintendo gets strange
26
Mar
Posted by admin in 3DS, DS, Gaming on 03 26th, 2010

Alright. The utterly strange Nintendo 3DS reveal has cooled a bit these past few days, but in that sentence lies the rub: Strange.

It’s completely, mind-bogglingly strange that Nintendo, known for Apple-like secrecy—especially concerning hardware—would just casually drop what is arguably the biggest advancement in their portable line since the boxy gray DS was revealed six years ago. In their latest newsletter, industry rag GamesIndustry.biz pics up on this:
Bombshell dropped, Nintendo proceeded to airily imply that we can find out more at E3 if we’re bothered, and wandered off nonchalantly, leaving the Internet and the mainstream press alike to implode under the weight of speculation, claim and counter-claim.

And the announcement was indeed a bombshell. Three-dimensional gaming is in its infancy, and yet here it is, the apparent cornerstone of Nintendo’s next disruptive strategy (hell, some, like myself, are critical that it will ever truly take off in the near term, as [...]

The Final Word: Why the N64 wasn’t a huge success (and how the next Wii can be)
25
Mar
Posted by admin in Gaming, Wii on 03 25th, 2010

Looking back on Nintendo systems, it’s easy to see why the NES, GameBoy, DS, and Wii were such successes. The NES had Super Mario Bros. GameBoy had Tetris. DS had Nintendodogs. Wii had Wii Sports. In other words, they all had must-have launch games. But to get theses games, you had to buy the hardware.
Conversely, it’s easy to see why the GameCube never really took off, despite its potential. The reason: it launched with Luigi’s Mansion. A fun little Mario knock-off, yes, but hardly a system-seller. (NOTE: SNES and GBA—although extremely successfully—were more brand extensions of popular systems, so they were an easy buy for people already in love with NES and GameBoy.)
Of all Nintendo hardware, though, there is one notable anomaly. Why didn’t the N64 enjoy massive success?
After all, it launched with Mario 64, which pioneered 3D games. The console introduced a new input device: the analogy stick, something [...]

Nintendo stock rises following 3DS announcement
24
Mar
Posted by admin in 3DS, DS, Gaming on 03 24th, 2010

You may have been a bit bewildered by Nintendo’s out-of-nowhere announcement of a new DS a week before the North American launch of the DSi XL, but one group seems to have no issues with the timing or technology of the Nintendo 3DS: investors.
Marketwatch reports that Nintendo stock rose 9.7 percent yesterday in response to the hardware announcement. While it’s hard to gauge exactly what it is about the 3DS that has inspired such confidence among investors, we would guess it’s less about the current 3D trend and more about the fact that Nintendo announced a new thing, and Nintendo things have been good for stocks in the last five years or so.

DS sells over 30 million in Japan
24
Mar
Posted by admin in DS, Gaming on 03 24th, 2010

The same day it chose to announce the 3DS, Nintendo officially hit a ridiculous milestone for the existing DS platform(s) in Japan: 30 million units sold. Enterbrain estimates that, through March 21, the handheld has sold 30,030,434 units. The last reported worldwide total, in January, was around 125 million. Unsurprisingly, the best-selling game is New Super Mario Bros., with 5,767,262 copies sold.
30 million is indeed a record for the best-selling console ever in Japan; however, every time anyone in Japan buys a DS, it’s a new record, because the DS became Japan’s best-selling console as soon as it passed the PS2 at around the 21 million mark. There are people in line at electronics stores now, each of whom is about to bring the DS to a record sales total.

Analyst: 3DS will help Nintendo stave off iPhone
23
Mar
Posted by admin in 3DS, DS, Gaming on 03 23rd, 2010

Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian has said in a new report that the Nintendo 3DS system will not only increase unit sales for the DS platform (obviously), it will satisfy demands of consumers now excited about 3D technology, and help differentiate Nintendo’s offerings from iPhone software. He notes that cheap iPhone games are cutting into the DS business. “However,” he suggests, “with a differentiated 3D display, high quality games, and profitable business model for publishers, we believe the 3DS could help reduce the competitive threat from smartphones.”
Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter, however, doesn’t believe 3D on its own is enough — because if that’s all it is, Apple will simply copy it. “It seems that if 3D on portable devices was easy,” he told CVG, “Apple would have beat them to it. If they truly pioneer a technology, my guess is that Apple will mimic the technology.” That’s [...]

3DS said to feature 3D control stick, Sharp LCD screens; will be playable at E3
23
Mar
Posted by admin in 3DS, DS, Gaming on 03 23rd, 2010

As if news of a new handheld device coming from Nintendo in the middle of the night wasn’t enough, Engadget today spotted two reports out of Japanese newspapers Asahi and Nikkei detailing the 3DS’ known hardware so far. Asahi claims that the handheld’s 3D output (remember, sans silly glasses) comes via a “parallax barrier LCD” from Sharp, while Nikkei backs this up and adds that the device’s screens will measure roughly four inches diagonally across (each).
Nikkei also claims the device will feature a “3D control stick,” though this could presumably be an analog control stick, as well as rumble support and an upped battery life / speedier Wi-Fi. And while we heard last night that the device would arrive on retail shelves sometime in “Fiscal 2010″ (before the end of calendar year March 2011), the report says it will arrive during the “second half of [calendar] 2010,” owing the [...]

Nintendo 3DS handheld announced, more news at E3
23
Mar
Posted by admin in 3DS, DS, Gaming on 03 23rd, 2010

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/nintendo/Nintendo_s_next_handheld_has_3D_without_the_glasses’; A press release on Nintendo’s Japanese website appears to confirm the company’s next handheld console, temporarily named the “Nintendo 3DS,” and said to include hardware and software that will enable “3D effects” without the need for special glasses. The console is stated to be backwards compatible with DS and DSi games and is expected to go on sale (in Japan, presumably) “during the fiscal year ending March 2011″ — so within the next year. The press release has no pictures or other information, and save for the fact that it appears as a file on Nintendo’s website, there’s no other official word about the new hardware.
There are a few dots to connect, however: 3D gaming is on the rise, and a few other companies have also experimented with head tracking as a way to implement 3D effects. Nintendo’s own Satoru Iwata hasn’t been impressed with 3D [...]

Nintendo announces 3DS — the glasses-free 3D successor to the DS
23
Mar
Posted by admin in 3DS, DS, Gaming on 03 23rd, 2010

Whoa, now this is a whopper coming (almost) out of nowhere. Nintendo has just slipped out a press release in Japan informing the world that all-new 3D-capable portable hardware is coming, with a full unveiling set for E3 2010 this June. Tentatively titled the 3DS, this glasses-free 3D wonder is pitched as the successor to both the DS and DSi, and will use a “compatible cart” that should ensure backwards compatibility with your vast library of favorites from the older consoles. Nintendo expects to launch the 3DS into retail “during the fiscal year ending March 2011.”
