What do you guys think about this? Could this be one of the first 3DS titles?

March NPD: Pokemon and Kratos catch all the money
16
Apr
Posted by in Gaming on 04 16th, 2010

The ill-timed announcement of the 3DS wasn’t enough to scare consumers off from purchasing new DS systems. Thanks to the combination of a new hardware variant (the big, big, big DSi XL) and new Pokemon games, the dual-screened platform sold like gangbusters. Meanwhile, hardware shortages kept the PS3 from massive sales despite the fact that it had the best-selling game of March (God of War 3).
Speaking of software, we’ve learned a lot about you from this month. For example, Final Fantasy fans strongly prefer PS3, Battlefield fans strongly prefer 360, and Pokemon fans’ dollar votes went to SoulSilver over HeartGold by quite a lot. How do you even decide something like that? Seriously, one of the 1.78 million or so of you who bought it — take us through your process!

-DS: 701K88K (14%)
-Wii: 558K160K (40%)
-360: 338K>84K (-20%)
-PS3: 314K46K (-13%)
-PSP: 120K13K (-10%)
-PS2: 118K16K (16%)

Mega64 shows off the Nintendo 3DS’s revolutionary tech

Apr
Posted by in 3DS, DS, Gaming on 04 15th, 2010

We’re not quite sure what we like best about the new video from comedy goldmine Mega64 after the break: the proposed lifelike tech behind the upcoming Nintendo 3DS (we’ve got our fingers crossed!) or that Korn is currently recording a new song for Haze 2. It’s probably the Haze 2 thing.
Regardless, it’s a great spoof on an upcoming gaming handheld we know virtually nothing about, which kinda makes the handheld the easiest thing to make fun of right now. Besides Haze, of course.

White DSi comes with Bowser’s Inside Story
14
Apr
Posted by in DS, DSi, Gaming on 04 14th, 2010

If you haven’t picked up a DSi, and or Mario and Luigi; this might be the perfect time too. Especially if you don’t want to lug around the the bulky and bigger DSi XL. Starting April 25, a white versions of the Nintendo DSi will be sold at certain stores for the price of $169.99.
While most of you probably have a DS/DSlite and are on the fence about upgrading to a DSi; let me just say, Bowser’s Inside Story is one of the better Mario and Luigi game titles out there. It seems like a pretty good bundle for a limited edition color as well.
Yet, seriously, how many of you guys are going to wait for the Nintendo 3ds? Do you think Nintendo shot themselves in the foot for announcing it way earlier than they should have?

Reggie Fils-Aime: Nintendo 3DS is Nintendo’s next ‘platform’
13
Apr
Posted by in 3DS, DS, Gaming on 04 13th, 2010

It may sound like the obvious statement to make, but for how much Nintendo has enjoyed marginally improving its handheld over the last few years, it’s a big deal. According to an interview with Businessweek, Nintendo president Reggie Fils-Aime has stated that the upcoming 3DS will indeed be Nintendo’s next platform — not simply another revision of its already existing DS tech.
“The Nintendo 3DS for us is our next handheld platform,” Fils-Aime assures. Even though Nintendo’s business is “fundamentally about software, not hardware,” the new tech will be “a means to an end” — the final goal being “a great consumer experience.”
Reggie wouldn’t offer anything else on the proposed new handheld, other than mentioning Nintendo’s plans of debuting it at E3. We’ll be there.

Reggie confirms Nintendo 3DS is company’s “next handheld platform”
13
Apr
Posted by in 3DS, DS, Gaming on 04 13th, 2010

Nintendo president of America Reggie Fils-Aime has officially weighed in on the recently announced 3DS portable. His comments, while far from surprising given the markedly uncharateristic early reveal last month, nevertheless gave further credence to the belief that the device will indeed be much different than anything Nintendo’s put forth in the space before.
In a recent interview with BusinessWeek, the outspoken executive reaffirmed that this is indeed a next-gen portable, not a XL style refresh, and that it will sport features that are otherwise impossible to implement with current DS models.
“We have ideas of what we want to bring to the consumer that we can’t do with the current DS model”, he said. “The Nintendo 3DS for us is our next handheld platform.”
So, yeah. No surprise there, really. Two months until we see this thing in action. [Image: Kotaku]

Was touch the secret to DS success?
10
Apr
Posted by in DS, Gaming on 04 10th, 2010

Since launching nearly six years ago, the Nintendo DS has enjoyed otherworldly success. It has sold faster than any video game system before it.
Including both DS Lite and DSi variations, Nintendo has shipped more than 130 million units worldwide, putting the DS on pace to become the best selling system ever—a mere 10 million away from current heavy weight champion, the PlayStation 2. And it still has legs. The DS, that is.
As we approach the arrival of the 3DS, what made its predecessor such a success? The obvious answer would be, “It’s the touch screen, dummy.” But that’s only the beginning.
When first shown in 2004, the gut reaction of the public to the DS went something like this: “Uh, Palm-like stylus games sucks. And why would I want two smaller screens when the soon-to-be release PlayStation Portable has one gigantic widescreen. Nintendo has really lost their marbles. Jig’s up.”
The system [...]

Pokemon Black and White Versions Announced for DS
9
Apr
Posted by in DS, Gaming on 04 9th, 2010

Nintendo has officially announced the names for the next generation in the Pokemon series: Pokemon Black and Pokemon White. According to Joystiq’s translation, developers are promising that “every aspect will be reborn innovatively.” We don’t know much more than that, but those who were hopeful that Gen 5 will be a launch title for the 3DS may be disappointed. It may be just me, but Black and White, along with the promise to revamp the majority of the game, seems like a new dawn for the series. I’m pretty optimistic for the future changes. We should know more by April 15th, and you can bet Sean Buckley’s prized Caterpie that we’ll be covering this as it happens.

Apple Beat Nintendo to a Unified Gaming Network…For Shame
8
Apr
Posted by in Gaming on 04 8th, 2010

Alright, I know this isn’t an Apple blog, but today’s iPhone OS 4.0 announcement brought us word that Apple is working on a unified social gaming network. That’s right, Apple beat Nintendo to it, leaving Nintendo the only major competitor in the market that doesn’t have one.
PS3 & PSP: Playstation Network
X-Box 360: X-Box Live
iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch: Game Center
PC: Steam
Wii & DS/3DS: ???
For being an a major innovator in the video game industry, Nintendo sure is taking their sweet time on this. If they don’t announce something at E3, I’ll be very, very put out. Its a matter of necessity at this point. A little hint, Nintendo: CLUB NINTENDO!

Fake alert: This is not the Nintendo 3DS
6
Apr
Posted by in 3DS, DS, Gaming on 04 6th, 2010

It was an honest effort to dupe the internet, but this alleged photo of the still-veiled Nintendo 3DS is horribly fake. Notice the perfectly lined shadows and suspect-looking button plastic. Never mind that it looks like a Photoshoper designed it instead of an actual industrial designer. “I think I’ll hold out for the 3DS Lite,” one Kotaku commenter said in jest.
Silly fakers. You’re gonna have to do much better than this.

A Fake Prototype 3DS Appears!

Apr
Posted by in 3DS, DS, Gaming on 04 6th, 2010

Saw this posted on 2ch earlier. Said to be a Prototype 3DS but looks fake as arseholes to me. The guy explains that the system has features such as smoothing filters for playing up-scaled DS games, a pressure sensitive touch screen, rotatable controls, and 3D Augmented Reality capabilities. Even though it’s obviously a fake there’s plenty of nice screenshots to look at on the blog. Check out the homepage link for more information, google translate is your friend.

Sharp details new 3D screens for mobile devices
2
Apr
Posted by in Gaming on 04 2nd, 2010

Adding more depth to the already eye-popping rumor that the Nintendo 3DS will use Sharp’s parallax barrier LCD screen, Sharp today detailed its latest 3D, no-glasses-required screen for mobile devices. Engadget spotted the announcement this morning — one that advertises the 3D touchscreen as “ideal for mobile devices such as digital cameras, mobile phones, and smartphones” — rightly pointing out that the screen falls near-perfectly in step with Nintendo’s recently revealed 3DS handheld.
The announcement also confirms that the screen can switch between 2D and 3D modes, and that the non-touchscreen iteration of it will go into production in “the first half of fiscal 2010 [beginning April 1].” Presumably we could see the touchscreen version going into full production soon afterward, and a new Nintendo handheld on retail shelves by this holiday. We’ve contacted Nintendo to see if Sharp will be lending its screens to the 3DS, but we wouldn’t go [...]
