November NPD: Best month ever for retail, Xbox |
9 Dec |
November is traditionally a big, big month for games, thanks to the impending holidays and the temporary financial insanity bestowed upon Americans by the Black Friday Effect. This November may have been the biggest. The NPD reports that last month was the “best November on record in terms of new physical retail sales,” ahead of November 2008 by around $30 million. Call of Duty: Black Ops had the biggest first month of any game ever, with 8.4 million copies.
And Microsoft (producer of the best-selling non-DS console) tells us that with 1.37 million consoles sold, November 2010 was not only the biggest November ever for Xbox, it was the biggest month ever. Thanks, Kinect! Thanks, new hardware! Handhelds were actually down vs. previous years, though the DS was still the top-selling console, with the Mario red DSi XL representing the majority of sales. Nintendo said that “over 1.5 million” DS [...]

October NPD: NBA 2K11 tops charts, Xbox 360 ‘best selling console in 2010′ |
17 Nov |
Here is the second edition of the revised (and less informative) NPD report. With the market research group no longer sharing specific hardware figures, it’s noteworthy to point out that only Microsoft has (as of writing) released concrete sales numbers. Major Nelson tweeted that the console sold 325k consoles in October. Although the figure represents a 32% drop from the previous month, it was enough to secure Microsoft’s spot as best-selling console of the month. Major Nelson also added that the Xbox 360 “is the best selling console in 2010 w/ 3.5 million” sold so far.
Sony’s response doesn’t offer console sales numbers, but Patrick Seybold commented about increased momentum for its PlayStation Move motion controller. “The PS3 Move Bundle had a 15% increase in sales since launch last month, and we’re working hard to keep the inventory up across the country to meet strong consumer demand.” In addition, Seybold wanted [...]

Pachter predicts $50 price cuts in 2011, Xbox first to drop |
4 Oct |
Gaming analyst Michael Pachter expects good things from the industry in 2011, but not without a little sacrifice from the Big Three. Pach Attack prognosticated to Industry Gamers that “a $50 console price cut across the board will impact software sales by a positive 5 percent.” (He expects to see an additional market boost from sales of 3DS, as well as Move and Kinect products.) Pachter further predicted the Xbox 360 to be the first to fall in price at some point during the spring of next year.
When questioned, competing analysts The Joystiq Consortium had a far more monolithic picture of 2011 to paint, saying, “It’s basically just going to be Minecraft.” Time will tell, we suppose.

Paper Wars rated for DSi, Wii, Xbox 360 and PC |
10 Sep |
Crap of Defense — in spite of declaring itself to be the “worst game ever” — is making the jump to pretty much every platform out there. Like the PSP version, the game is being re-branded as Paper Wars: Cannon Fodder, but will (presumably) feature the same sloppily drawn visuals and rather cheap-sounding audio. Like Angry Birds, this game simply cannot be contained by the iPhone.
Already available as a PSN Mini in Europe, the ESRB has rated additional versions of the game for DSi, Wii, Xbox 360 and PC. Considering the simplicity of the game, we’re unsurprised by how quickly the developer has been able to make so many ports. Watch the distressingly cheap trailer for the iPhone original after the break.

Best Buy sale discounts Bayonetta, DJ Hero and Xbox 360 bundles |
16 Aug |
Frugal shoppers should take note of a massive Best Buy sale going on right now. It would seem everything must go, as Best Buy is not only discounting Platinum Games’ excellent Bayonetta down to $20 on both the PS3 and Xbox 360, but also slashing prices across the board on Xbox 360, PS3, Wii and DS games.
If hardware is more you thing, Best Buy has the Final Fantasy XIII and Splinter Cell: Conviction Xbox 360 bundles for $299.99 a piece, with a $50 gift card. Our strong-wristed readers will likely be interested in the DJ Hero bundle, which comes with one turntable controller — it’s only $40 right now.
Wait, what’s that sound? It’s as if millions of piggy banks cried out in terror, only to be silenced. I fear something — oh, right.

NEWS: Xbox 360 Outsells Wii, DS in July NPDs |
13 Aug |
Super Mario Galaxy 2, LEGO Harry Potter, Dragon Quest IX, and New Super Mario Bros. Wii all make appearances in the top 10 for the July NPDs.
The July 2010 NPDs are in, and the biggest shock is that the Xbox 360 was the highest-selling system, besting the second-ranked Nintendo DS by nearly 50,000 units.
The Wii was actually closer to the PlayStation 3’s sales, coming in third roughly 40,000 units ahead of Sony’s system. However, the console remains slightly above its July 2009 sales, which came during a month in which Wii Sports Resort sold more than 500,000 units. Check out the full hardware sales below.

July NPD: Xbox 360 takes the lead, first time since Sept. ‘07 |
12 Aug |
Compared to last year, July’s NPD numbers are fairly static, with overall video game industry sales down just 1% from $850.6m to $846.5m. While software sales were down a sizable 8% with newcomer NCAA Football 11 bringing in the top two spots for a combined 667K units sold, hardware sales were up a hefty 12%, mostly on the back of the newly redesigned (and, ostensibly, fixed!) Xbox 360 S. Looks like there was “unprecedented demand,” like Microsoft said.
Most notably, that July sales surge resulted in a minor 2% drop in Xbox sales while every other console suffered double digit drops. This, as you can see in our lineup below, has earned the Xbox 360 the rare opportunity to best the Nintendo DS as the best-selling piece of video game hardware last month. To put things in perspective, NPD analyst Anita Frazier notes, “It’s the first time since September ‘07 [...]

Monster Hunter Frontier Online boosts Xbox 360 sales in Japan |
2 Jul |
The combination of new hardware and a “newish” Monster Hunter gave the Xbox 360 a considerable sales bump in Japan last week. Media Create reports that 17,000 Xboxes were sold in that time (versus 2,060 the previous week); 15,000 being the new model. That hardware sales rise coincides with the sale of 92,807 copies of Monster Hunter Frontier Online Beginner’s Package. Neither the new Xbox owners nor the existing ones saw any need to round out their game collections with additional games — there were no other 360 games among the top 50 bestselling software for the week.
Though Xbox 360 sales were much higher last week relative to the console’s typical performance in Japan, the clear winner was the DSi LL, thanks to a combination of several factors: a price cut, the release of three new colors of the system, and Love Plus+, the latest version of Konami’s breakout [...]

THQ: Saint’s Row for 3DS was already being made for Xbox Live Arcade |
30 Jun |
The Nintendo 3DS game list has a lot of predictable titles on it, but seeing Saint’s Row on there was somewhat of a surprise. But it was a natural fit, as THQ VP Danny Bilson recently said. Not only was Nintendo enthusiastic about putting mature content on its new system, but “the interesting thing about the game is we were already making it. We were already making it as our Xbox Live game and in 3D also. It’s designed for 3D already.”
Wait, an Xbox Live title? The Saint’s Row 3 universe is full of surprises — THQ is planning a whole fleet of games to launch together, and among those is a downloadable XBL game that will unlock content in the full game (and vice versa). The 3DS will share content as well — “all of our extension properties,” says Bilson, “all connect and unlock things in each other.”
Looks like [...]

MySims Sky Heroes flying to DS, Wii, Xbox 360, and PS3 this fall [update] |
5 May |
We were almost right about the trademarked MySims SkyHeroes: we guessed it would be headed to DS and Wii, but EA has surprised us by announcing the game for PS3 and Xbox 360 as well!. You’ll be able to see your unbelievably adorable characters in high definition.
SkyHeroes is, of all things, a cutesy air combat game, in which My … your … your MySim takes flight against the (apparently) evil Morcubus and his army. As you fight, your character’s fame will increase, as will the customization options for your plane.
The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions will feature both split-screen online multiplayer, in both cooperative and competitive game modes, for up to ten players. All four versions will be released this fall.
Update: trailer and screens added.

The Sims 3 coming to PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and DS this fall |
27 Apr |
As promised, last year’s best-selling PC franchise is finally coming to consoles, and just in time for the holiday season. EA has announced that The Sims 3 is in development for PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and DS, with all versions planned for fall release. The console versions promise “all-new” features, like “Karma Powers” that determine whether your Sim can “get lucky” or, on the other end of the spectrum, experience an “epic fail.” In addition, the PS3 and Xbox 360 editions will include Facebook connectivity, so you can share Trophy and Achievement updates with friends.
The Wii version will feature an exclusive beach town, complete with its own residents, careers and “lifetime wishes”; and the DS version will introduce a new “Story Mode,” a first for a handheld Sims game, allowing players to go through a “complete life simulation.”
