BLOG: So How Many Xbox 360s Do I Need to Duct Tape Together? |
26 Jan |
Math is hard.
So I’m trying to get this all straight.
There’s a rumor out there that says the Wii U will be 2x as powerful as the Xbox 360.
There’s another rumor that says the Xbox “720″ will be 6x as powerful as the Xbox 360.
That same second rumor says the Xbox “720″ will yield 20% (or 1.2x) greater performance than the Wii U.
Using the Xbox 360’s “power” as a base of 100 that means:

RUMOR: The Next Xbox Is Only 20% More Powerful Than Wii U |
25 Jan |
Nintendo won’t be technologically behind this upcoming generation.
The Wii U will almost be as powerful as the next generation of Xbox, according to an IGN source.
The source claims that the next generation of Xbox will utilize a graphics processor that will provide 6 times the processing power of that of the Xbox 360. Compared to the Wii U, however, the new Xbox will only be 20% more powerful. This seems to point out that Nintendo is again going to provide us a system that isn’t far off from its competition, much like the GameCube was in the previous generation. The gap between Nintendo’s current system, The Wii, and other systems was quite large.

While not exactly Nintendo news, IGN today has revealed that the next Xbox (how bout we DON’T call it the 720, shall we?) will be based on the AMD 6000 series of GPU architecture which was introduced last year. While we don’t know exactly what will ship inside the next Xbox, IGN cites that the [...]

November NPD: A new record, with Xbox 360 joined by MW3 and Skyrim on top (Update: 360 sales numbers) |
9 Dec |
(Update: Microsoft Chief of Interactive Entertainment Aaron Greenberg has released Xbox 360 sales via Twitter, which are included below.)
It’s a little good, a little bad with this year’s November 2011 NPD results. While “unit sales grew for console hardware, as well as console, portable, and PC software,” NPD analyst Anita Frazier warns that “a decline in average retail price in all categories” besides portable hardware resulted in dollar sales that were flat compared to last November. That said, November 2011 “marks the best November on record for sales of new physical content,” besting the previous record holder, November 2008.
Unsurprisingly, the Xbox 360 was the top selling piece of gear for the month and Frazier notes that the “gap between 360 sales and sales of the next best selling platform was the largest we’ve seen since December 2008 when the Nintendo DS was the top selling system.” Microsoft Chief of Interactive [...]

NEWS: Wii U Sizzle Reel Featured Video from Xbox 360 and PS3 Versions of Games |
13 Jun |
Reggie promises that third-party titles on Wii U will look at least as good as their counterparts on the other systems.
“Most” of the footage shown representing third-party Wii U games featured in Nintendo’s press conference are apparently from Xbox 360 and PS3 versions. In an interview with Gametrailers’ Jeff Keighley (at 4:33), Nintendo of America’s Reggie Fils-Amie confirmed that the videos were from other consoles, and explained that it is because the system is “a year away.”
When asked if the games would look “as good” or “better” than the versions showed, Reggie noted that the graphics are ultimately up to the third party developers. He reinforced that the system is 1080p, and is capable of providing visuals on par with Sony and Microsoft’s consoles.

With motion now standard and when equally priced, Xbox 360 more popular than Wii |
13 May |
The Wii has seen quite the drop in demand recently. After dominating the competition for the first four years of its life, the game-changing console has been relegated to second place in America for the last 12 months (give or take a month or two) behind Xbox 360. In other words, when equally priced at [...]

Thor and Captain America to avenge in 3D on PS3, Xbox and (of course) 3DS |
18 Mar |
Sega is showing the Thor and Captain America games at an event for both Marvel properties, and is also tweeting news snippets out of said event. First off, games based on both Marvel movies will be released on 3DS.
Second — and this dovetails nicely — the Xbox and PS3 versions will also be playable in 3D. No word yet about whether this will require a 3D television or if it’ll be something like TriOviz that works on everything. Thor is currently slated for a May 11 release, with Captain America following sometime this summer.

December NPD: Xbox 360 comes out on top in 2010 revenue |
13 Jan |
Microsoft has claimed the year of 2010, as a whopping $6.2 billion was spent on Xbox 360 games and accessories at retail, making it the (financial) king of consoles last year. December’s NPD report also shows a 42 percent year-over-year growth for the Xbox 360 and, as expected, Kinect sales were strong, launching Kinect Sports into the top 10 for the month.
Elsewhere in the report, NPD says that total new, physical video game sales are down by 9 percent to $5.06 billion, and video game hardware is down a total of 16 percent to $1.84 billion. In fact, the only tracked category that saw year-over-year growth in December was video game accessories — the PlayStation Move and Kinect pushed that category up 10 percent from last December to sales of $853 million.

Pachter: Xbox 360 outsold PS3 two-to-one in December; Nintendo reveals numbers |
11 Jan |
Wedbush Securities games industry analyst Michael Pachter’s magic crystal ball predicts another month of Xbox 360 dominance in the NPD charts. His latest report to IndustryGamers says to expect sales of Microsoft’s console to be more than double that of its biggest competitor, the PS3, for December. Prognosticating that the Xbox 360 sold 2.5 million units last month, he’s betting on a 91 percent boost in sales over November for Microsoft. As for the PS3, Pachter figures it sold 1.2 million units in December, a 12 percent dip compared to its performance in November.
As for actual real numbers, Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata revealed in an interview with Nikkei (via Andriasang) that the Wii sold over two million units in December. The DS reportedly performed on par with the same period in 2009, which would be somewhere around three million units.

Michael Jackson: The Experience moonwalks onto PS3 and Xbox 360 April 12 |
6 Jan |
Someone whose name has been lost to history once said, “Don’t stop ’til you get enough.” And that’s exactly what Michael Jackson fans have done with Ubisoft’s Michael Jackson: The Experience. Fans have not stopped buying the game to the tune of two million copies so far — what Ubisoft’s declared a “global holiday hit” — in North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia, across the currently available Wii, DS and PSP releases.
As for the forthcoming PS3 and Xbox 360 versions, Ubisoft has announced you’ll be able to pantomime along to the hits using Kinect or Move on April 12 in North America, and on April 14 in EMEA territories. Additionally, the “Blood on the Dance Floor” and “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You” songs will be exclusive to these versions, “with additional tracks to be revealed soon.”

Exclusive: In an Xbox Live world, Nintendo defends online Wii service |
6 Jan |
Nintendo’s online service is better than most hardened gamers give it credit for. At least that’s what company spokesman Kit Ellis told Infendo in an interview last week.
When asked how the popularity of Xbox Live and PSN have encouraged Nintendo to rethink their online strategy in planning their next console, Ellis turned the conversation back to the present. “The Wii is here now, so let’s talk about its online offerings rather than speculating on the future,” he said. “The idea of online services is incredibly broad, so I’ll point to a few specific products that spotlight what Wii can do online.”
Although not as usable as either Xbox Live or PlayStation Network when connecting with others, Ellis said Nintendo’s free Wi-Fi Connection is more than capable of satisfying wired gamers, especially in light of recent improvements such as demos.
“For downloadable games, Fluidity, which launched earlier in December, is a great showpiece [...]

Xbox 360 and PS3 dominated UK in 2010, game market sales totaled £2.875 billion |
4 Jan |
The UK video game market withstood a 13 percent sales decline in 2010 from 2009, according to The Association for UK Interactive Entertainment’s annual report. UKIE put total software and hardware sales at £2.875 billion ($4.8 billion) in the territory last year, with console games alone accounting for £1.45 billion ($2.26 billion) of the total gross.
The Xbox 360 and PS3 were the only hardware platforms to see sales growth, with the 360 accounting for £232 million ($361 million) in sales from 18.2 million consoles sold (thanks price break!), and the PS3 just below that figure with £229 million ($357 million) in sales from 13.8 million units. UKIE didn’t share specific numbers for handhelds or the Wii, though its report notes the total revenue for console hardware sales amounted to £800 million ($1.25 billion) in 2010.
Of course, key product releases helped sell those consoles — the biggest undoubtedly being Call of [...]
