Portabliss: Mighty Flip Champs DX (PSP Minis) |
18 Jul |
Did you know that you can download handheld games now? That’s amazingly convenient! The only inconvenient part of it is finding the right games to buy — and that’s where we come in, with our Portabliss column. Three times a week, our new Portabliss column will tell you about a downloadable game on the iPhone, iPad, Android device, DSi, 3DS, PSP, etc. Today: Mighty Flip Champs DX!
We didn’t have a periodic column about portable downloadable games when WayForward unleashed the bookish puzzle game Mighty Flip Champs upon DSiWare. WayForward graciously ported the game to PSP and released it as a Mini last week, affording us the opportunity to treat it as a new release once again and write about it here. Thanks, WayForward!

Duke Nukem: Critical Mass trailer skips the PSP version for good reason |
8 Apr |
After a mysterious quiet period (which is totally uncharacteristic for a Duke Nukem game), Deep Silver and Apogee are planning to release Duke Nukem: Critical Mass for DS this week in Europe and next month in North America. You can see it in action in the trailer after the break, and, well … it looks like a thoroughly humiliating experience, narrated by Jon St. John.
Surprisingly, the press release accompanying the trailer says that the PSP version is coming out at the same time — but Deep Silver informs us that it was actually canceled. So if you’re in Europe and in line for Critical Mass on PSP … go home.

3DS and PSP BlazBlue CS 2 headed to Europe |
11 Mar |
The 3DS and PSP ports of BlazBlue: Continuum Shift 2 are being released in Europe “this year,” published by Zen United — the company best known for publishing all the other BlazBlue games in Europe. Aksys Games, who typically publishes the series in North America, has yet to make any announcements.
Both versions include all the characters from the console versions, including the three characters that were released as DLC (Makoto, Valkenhayn, and Platinum the Trinity).

Japanese artists collaborate for 3DS/PSP monster RPG (with monstrous name) |
16 Feb |
Everything about the new 3DS/PSP RPG from publisher FuRyu, revealed in the latest issue of Famitsu, sounds great. It’s got a quality cast of developers behind it, including Shining Force EXA/Cross scenario writer Takashi Hino, illustrators from the Idolm@ster and Dream Club series, Lunar: The Silver Star writer Toshio Akashi, and even a theme song by Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu.
The game has an interesting premise, too: It’s set in a world where humanoid children grow up into monsters — exhibiting more monster-like abilities as they mature — and in which a young prince attempts to regain his true dragon strength at the bottom of a huge dungeon. The battle system allows each party member to gather up to five monsters and chain attacks together.
Sounds great, right? Well, everything about it except the name: UnchainBlades ReXX. We had to put that at the end so you’d read the [...]

Ubisoft on next-gen portable dev: 3DS / PSP2 first, ‘the other machines’ next |
15 Feb |
After some success getting in on the ground floor with Kinect – Ubisoft was gunning to be the “top third-party publisher” – it’s looking to repeat that formula with the upcoming 3DS, dropping six games for the portable’s European launch. But with increasingly competent smartphones eating away at the dedicated handheld gaming market, what’s Ubisoft’s long-term plan for supporting the new portable landscape?
While the PSP had, at one point, been a solid platform for Ubisoft – Assassin’s Creed: Bloodlines has sold roughly 500,000 units, a Ubi exec noted on this afternoon’s earnings call – “today it’s a bit more difficult as you have the PSP at the end of its cycle,” CEO Yves Guillemot said. With a stated goal to invest in “future consoles, notably the 3DS and the NGP,” Ubisoft is hoping to extend the lifespan of its portable productions by focusing on two phases of release.
“We [...]

Check out BlazBlue Continuum Shift 2 on PSP and 3DS |
2 Feb |
Arc System Works released a new trailer for the multiplatform handheld release of BlazBlue Continuum Shift 2, allowing us to see what the HD fighter looks like shrunken down onto the 3DS and/or the PSP. We’re not entirely clear about which it is, since the trailer doesn’t specify which version the footage displays. Whichever one looks pretty nice!
Luckily, the official site does include screenshots of both versions, clearly marked. In fact, the 3DS version is presented inside a 3DS, to make absolutely sure you know which one it is. Like every other 3DS fighter, it has a command list on the bottom screen.

PSP is Japan’s best-selling console of 2010, Pokemon Black/White the top game |
30 Dec |
You could probably guess the two best-selling games in Japan this year: Pokemon Black and White and Monster Hunter Portable 3rd. The DS monster collecting adventure and the PSP monster murder adventure sold 4,734,064 and 3,163,750 units respectively, according to a year-end report by ASCII. Monster Hunter managed to finish in second place after less than one month of sales — it was released on December 1.
It should come as no surprise, given the blockbuster status of those two, that the DS and PSP were the best-selling hardware platforms in Japan as well. The PSP was the only console to show growth in sales versus 2009, selling 600,000 more consoles than the previous year. 2,719,544 DS systems were sold in 2010, down a million from 2009. Find out how other systems did, and see the rest of the top ten best-selling games, after the break.

Study says phone gaming on the rise, while PSP and DS ’stagnate’ |
8 Dec |
The battle for mobile gaming supremacy rages on! While the traditional purveyors of mobile gaming, Nintendo and Sony, iterate with the 3DS and PSP2 respectively, newcomers like Apple, with its increasingly ubiquitous iOS offerings, Google, with its Android OS, and even Microsoft, with its recently launched Windows Phone 7 platform, offer a compelling (and, for now, more technologically powerful) alternative. And, if data from market research firm Interpret is to be believed, this alternative is waxing, while PSP and DS use wanes.
“The proliferation of highly multifunctional smartphones and messaging phones is a very real threat to the dominance by the DS and PSP of the handheld gaming market,” Interpret’s Courtney Johnson, manager of Research and Analysis, said in a press release announcing the firm’s upcoming report. “Devices which satisfy a variety of entertainment and utility are fast outstripping single-function devices as consumer favorites.” To that end, Interpret’s report -\– which [...]
