NEWS: Japanese Game Industry CEO Salaries Revealed
30
Jun
Posted by in Gaming on 06 30th, 2010

Ever wonder how much Iwata and Miyamoto make?
A recent report in Asahi detailed the salaries of top Japanese game industry executives, including Nintendo President Satoru Iwata and top game designer Shigeru Miyamoto.
The revelation stems from a new requirement that Japanese companies must disclose to shareholders the salaries of board members that exceed ¥100 million.  This includes Iwata, who makes an annual salary of ¥187 million, or right around the $2 million USD mark (depending on currency conversion rates).  He makes a base salary of ¥68 million (approximately $770,000 USD), with the rest being rewards for performance incentives met. Shigeru Miyamoto is one of a group of six board members that made a combined ¥100 million ($1.1 million USD), but his base salary was not disclosed.

THQ: Saint’s Row for 3DS was already being made for Xbox Live Arcade

The Nintendo 3DS game list has a lot of predictable titles on it, but seeing Saint’s Row on there was somewhat of a surprise. But it was a natural fit, as THQ VP Danny Bilson recently said. Not only was Nintendo enthusiastic about putting mature content on its new system, but “the interesting thing about the game is we were already making it. We were already making it as our Xbox Live game and in 3D also. It’s designed for 3D already.”
Wait, an Xbox Live title? The Saint’s Row 3 universe is full of surprises — THQ is planning a whole fleet of games to launch together, and among those is a downloadable XBL game that will unlock content in the full game (and vice versa). The 3DS will share content as well — “all of our extension properties,” says Bilson, “all connect and unlock things in each other.”

Chinese Touch v1.3
language learning tool

Chinese Touch is a language learning tool for Nintendo DS. It doesn’t try to provide a complete course for a specific level of language skill, but is meant more as a generic tool to make your own learning docs easily portable and more accessible. You can use any UTF8-encoded text files and word lists. To get you started the download already includes a beginners guide to Chinese (Mandarin) from wikibooks.org

Masahiro Sakurai explains Kid Icarus’ uprising on 3DS

Posted by in 3DS, DS, Gaming on 06 30th, 2010

Speaking to Techland, Kid Icarus: Uprising producer Masahiro Sakurai described how the new 3DS franchise revival came about. Essentially, all of the distinguishing characteristics of the game came into the picture separately.
First, Sakurai decided that he wanted to make a shooting game for Nintendo’s new handheld, which he knew would be more powerful than the DS. Then, according to Sakurai, “Mr. Iwata said, ‘Maybe you might like to do some Nintendo franchise,’ and I felt that if the match was good, then there’s definitely room for that.” Sakurai was thinking Star Fox, but “the game design incorporates a lot of different views; for example, flying and shooting sideways, or turning around and shooting behind — and I felt that there were some restrictions with Star Fox in this regard.” (Of course, Star Fox ended up on 3DS anyway.)
It was only after coming up with the game concept that Sakurai learned [...]

Nintendo CEO Iwata doesn’t earn as much as you’d think

Posted by in Gaming on 06 29th, 2010

We never thought we’d say this about a CEO (it just feels wrong), but Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata totally deserves a raise. The CEO’s base salary last year was a measly ¥68 million (about $770K), with the executive taking home ¥187 ($2.1 million) after a performance bonus. Nintendo, as a company last year, made roughly $2.45 billion in profit! Nintendo guru Shigeru Miyamoto, along with a group of five other board members, apparently earned just ¥100 million ($1.13 million) total. These guys have to be making more money from stocks or something.
Andriasang reports the salary revelations are thanks to a new Japanese law requiring companies to reveal any board members’ earnings over ¥100 million ($1.13 million). For comparison, Square Enix’s Yoichi Wada collected ¥240 million ($2.7 million), while Sony’s Sir Howard Stringer, heading a company that admittedly extends way beyond games, pulled in a cool ¥816.5 million ($9.2 million). As for [...]

Studio Ghibli is making a DS game

Posted by in DS, Gaming on 06 29th, 2010

Many are familiar with Studio Ghibli Academy Award-winning Spirted Away, and other inspiring works such as Kiki’s Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro, Howls Moving Castle, and so forth. The studio has now begun work on a game for the DS and PS3.
Ninokuni stars a child character named Oliver, illustrated in the dreamy, quasi-historical style of Ghibli animation films.
The game comes with a 352-page book of magic spells that players use to help Oliver cast against enemies on a mission to bring his dead mother back to life.

“Ninokuni” will debut on the Nintendo DS in Japan in December, and on the PS3 in the following year. The studio is working on the project with Level-5, the creators of Professor Layton. The project is predicted to have great success in Japan, however it will need a strong distributor if they wish to have success in the US. [...]
