Nintendo DSi browser whups DS Lite in video speed test |

Although you’ve been able to browse the internet on the Nintendo DS for some time now, the experience has never really a been a good one. That’s something that Nintendo promised to change with the new DSi, and going by this browser speed showdown from the guys at N+, they’ve succeeded.

The test pits the Opera-designed web browser for the original DS Lite, that comes on a separate cartridge, against the new Opera Web Channel which is available as a free download for DSi owners. Unlike the cart solution, once you’ve downloaded the Web Channel to the DSi it becomes a permanent menu feature, and so you don’t have to carry anything extra around.
As the video demonstrates, the DSi gets to a readable version of the webpage – in this case the NY Times – before the DS Lite does, and the whole thing finishes loading well [...]

Nintendo has added the next round of rewards to its North American Club Nintendo store, for those of you eager to burn off your fake money. The WiiWare game Grill-Off with Ultra Hand is now available for real, priced at just 80 Coins. If you prefer to spend way more Coins, the second volume of Nintendo’s Game & Watch Collection for DS is now available — for 800 Coins, 200 more than the price of the original.
Finally, a set of three Mario posters has been added to the shop for 350 Coins. They’re okay … for something that isn’t a free video game.

Nintendo accounts for nearly 25% of GameStop’s new product purchased in fiscal 2009

Of the many, many games that GameStop sold in 2009 (not to mention the millions of dollars it made), we were left wondering where the lion’s share of the game retail juggernaut’s capital went in terms of product that the company was actually buying for its stores. And in a recent SEC filing for the last financial year, the company an unsurprising leader: Nintendo took the top spot, with 23 percent of GameStop’s “new product purchases” in fiscal year 2009. Sony trailed in second place by only five less points at 17 percent, while MIcrosoft, EA, and Activision picked up 12, 12, and 11 percent (respectively).
The remaining 25 percent presumably belongs to various third party peripherals and game-related items available for sale in the retail chain’s stores. That said, while over 41 percent of GameStop’s sales come from new products (read: from the vendors listed above) over the 26 [...]

Announcing a new handheld a few days before your next one is scheduled to launch doesn’t make a lot of sense, as Nintendo did with the 3DS last week shortly before releasing the DSi XL. But the uncanny maneuver wasn’t planned, it was forced, reports CNBC.
“Apparently, the Japanese press was all over it and talked with suppliers there and Nintendo just wanted to get out ahead by breaking the news to prevent a leak,” says Billy Pigeon, senior analyst with M2 Research. “Does it clash with the DSi XL? Yes it does. But the XL is old news in Japan.”
Great for fans. Not so great for prospective XL sales.

Big money has Nintendo staffers overworked, focused on bottom line?

That’s the story in at least one Japanese paper today, transcribed by Kotaku.
The paper reports that those working in the Online Division have voiced dissatisfaction, while those in the financial department have been pulling long hours. Continuing, the paper adds that even those employed in preeminent development positions have been feeling the crunch, spending their time working on sequels to hit titles instead of new games. “We don’t even have time to draw up plans for new games,” says a staffer.
To counter the problem, the paper says Nintendo has begun creating subsidiaries like Sora and outsourcing development of some games, including Metroid Other M. Think they can do it?
