The mighty R4 set the ball rolling for slot 1 solutions. Before its arrival the DS Homebrew scene was a bit Heath Robinson, with slot 2 GBA cartridges and pass me devices enabling users to run code on their handheld console. For a while the R4 ruled the market, sweeping all before it. The term R4 became synonymous with flash carts, much like the Hoover brand with vacuum cleaners. Then the updates began to dry up and a myriad array of clone carts filled the void promising SDHC support and new features which the original product didn’t have. These cards have created wholesale confusion to many unknowing buyers, who are completely unaware that many R4 clones are simply rebranded DSTT’s, EZ-FLASH’s or even DS FIRE carts. With no standard hardware and software ranging from minor hacks to complete rip-offs of other products OS’s, only compounded the damage to the R4 [...]

Etrian Odyssey III announced

This weeks Famistu brings news of a third Etrian Odyssey game. Entitled Sekaiju no Meikyuu III: Hoshimi no Raihousha (Etrian Odyssey III: Caller of the Starry Seas). The game is set for a March 2010 release in Japan. The first scans of the game reveal a pirate theme and some kind of seafaring addition to the map system. Looks like the same character art style is intact from the previous games. More speculation and large scan images after the break.

Tradewest (formally Midway) have picked up the UK rights to Safecracker. An intriguing puzzler. After the train wreck that was Myst DS, I’m hoping for better things from this PC port. Konami has picked up the publishing rights for Puzzle Chronicles. Due Q1 2010 the game follows in the footsteps of Infinite interactive’s other games. Notably the sleeper hit of 2007 Puzzle Quest. Using the tried and tested formula, Puzzle Chronicles appear to mix Puzzler Fighter with RPG elements. Click on for more details and new screens.

Rooms Coming to DS |

Hudson is bringing Rooms: The Main Building to the DS. The IGF finalist flash game will be released sometime in 2010. Rooms is a clever spin on the sliding block puzzle game. Each puzzle is a tile puzzle in which you move a small smartly dressed gentleman avatar. Each tile in the section is a section of the room, and players must guide their chap from his starting location to the exit.
The DS version makes use of the stylus to point, click and navigate the 100+ levels. It also features a level editor in which you can create your own rooms and share with friends locally and over Wi-Fi.

Supercard DSTWO announced |

The Supercard team have today confirmed that the development of the successor to the Supercard DSONE is now officially under way.
Their newest cart, unsurprisingly named the Supercard DSTWO, will be a mash up between the original DSONE and the hardware that was found in the iPlayer multimedia player. It will of course be DSi compatible, but will most likely not have ‘i’ in the title, but that is subject to change. That means you’re going to have a cart on your hands that can play both Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance games without any additional hardware. There will also be a SNES emulator, but we have not yet had the chance to see this in action.
Alongside the built in emulators, the DSTWO will also boast a revamped real-time feature system, multi language options, slow motion and a file management system.
